Concept of Health
Our body remains either in a healthy or diseased state. In this section we will see the healthy state.
In a healthy state, the body force has complete control on all the body parts (anatomy) and body processes / functions (physiology) of the body . In such states we can perform tasks or work according to our ability with greatest ease.
In health, various functions along with its body processes are carried out in a predecided set method, rate, and pace, etc. which remains under the control of the body force and is peculiar to each individual belonging to same family members and same species.
Due to this proper control
- All the chemical substances like substrates, end or intermediate products be it
hormones, enzymes, cytokines, organic chemicals (cholesterol, glucose, proteins, fats, lipids), antibodies, inorganic chemicals (sodium, potassium, magnesium), etc. are in the normal range
- All the cells / tissues are neither less (hypo) or more (hyper) in number or underdeveloped (atrophic) or over developed (tumor / cancer) in size or distorted in shape. In short, they are in a certain range, so we label that the body is in a healthy state. A healthy body is in a non-self-destructive mode.
One of the features of a healthy body is that whenever the level of any chemical substance in the body increases or decreases, it excites or generates stress on the other or the same body process which brings the increased or decreased substance back to normal. Thus, body milieu interior or homeostasis is maintained (this function is lacking in the diseased state, and it is discussed in the section of concept of disease).
Each chemical reaction starts with a substrate (thus absorbing the substrates) and gives many intermediate products as the chemical reaction progresses and ends with the formation of the end products. These intermediate and end products are released in
body fluids in the form of chemical and may
- Form a substrate for other chemical reactions
- Form an integral part of some cell or tissue structure.
- Remain in the body fluids like an intracellular or extracellular inclusion in the same or modified form.
- Excreted out of the body via excretory organs.
Thus, the level of each chemical is maintained, and it depends on the chemical reactions that either generate, utilize, or excrete it out of the body or use it to form some integral part of the cell or tissue. This happens because all the body processes are under the control of body force utilizing the energy from the body to preserve the body parts and functions
For example: when glucose molecules (chemical substance) increase in the body after a meal and go beyond the normal range, it automatically excites one set of processes or creates stress in the body due to which insulin secretion (along with many other changes in the body) is increased and glucose is brought back to normal. This happens only when the body is in a healthy state. If it is in the diseased state, glucose will keep on rising till further complications occur. Here we should know that rising glucose is not the actual disease, but it is the result of the failure of various processes that bring it back to normal. In investigations, you can only find out the level of glucose, but you cannot find out which process has failed. Medicines taken to lower increased glucose level can rectify the glucose levels temporarily but if the same medicine does not rectify the faulty or deviated process in the body then you will need medicines lifelong and have some complications of the faulty process (stroke, heart attack, blindness, kidney failure, etc. in case of diabetes mellitus) leading to death of the person.
In a healthy state, all processes in the body are under the control of body force and are functioning properly in a pre-decided manner and that is why each substrate and end products (e.g., glucose, uric acid, hormones like thyroid insulin etc., urine, stool, etc.) are in the normal range.
Summary
Health: Body force --> Body process {(controlled one) + (uses chemicals + cell, organs + energy)} ----> Body homeostasis is maintained
